What is Calendula?

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) also called as pot marigold, is derived from a plant called ‘Calendula’. It is an herbaceous plant that has been commonly used as a skincare ingredient due to its natural skin-nourishing properties. These are native plants in the southwestern part of Asia, Europe, and the Mediterranean. Calendulas are commonly found in products like ointments, balms, teas, capsules, and creams.

Benefits of Calendula

When our pores are clogged, the oils and dead skin cells that are supposed to be discarded are trapped and when it is infected with a bacteria – turns into an acne, blackhead, or whitehead. Calendula is known for its antibacterial properties that helps in battling acne. According to Gupta and Nand (2012), their study has shown results that supports how the extract of calendula may help in preventing acne due to its high antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus epidermidis which is a physiopathology of acne.

Our skin naturally reacts with the environment, products we use and how we handle it. An irritated skin is a sign that it isn’t reacting well with our current routine – it may be due to factors such as changing of weather, products with harsh chemicals or we aren’t being gentle with how we wash our face. To aid irritation, skincare products with soothing abilities are often used to subside the redness and itchiness that may occur when our skin is irritated. Calendula has properties that promotes soothing that from centuries back, it was used to treat wounds and itchiness.

When a skin is irritated, it often leads to or caused by the drying of skin. It means that the skin does not have enough moisture or oils to sustain itself. Hence, causing it to dry out. One of the benefits of calendula is that it helps in hydrating and moisturizing your skin. It can help your skin absorb its needed nutrients and attract moisture to keep retain its moisture.
